Strengthening Health Data Systems: Inside the DHIS2 Academy in Lomé

Introduction

In the fight against global health challenges, accurate and timely data is as critical as medical supplies. Across West Africa, health ministries and non-governmental organizations rely heavily on DHIS2 (District Health Information System 2)—the world’slargest health management information system platform—to monitor disease outbreaks, track vaccination campaigns, and allocate medical resources efficiently.

To build local technicalcapacity and master this vital platform, public health professionals, software developers, and data analysts recently gathered in Lomé, Togo, for the DHIS2 Regional Academy.

What is the DHIS2 Academy?

The DHIS2 Academy is a global training initiative led by the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo in collaboration with regional HISP nodes (such as HISP West and Central Africa). These academies provide intensive, practical training tailored specifically to the operational needs of national health systems.

The Lomé edition focused on Customization, Data Analytics, and System Administration, offering participants an immersive, project-based experience designed to bridge the gap between technical software features and public health execution.
